--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis, MO October 3-5, 2008.

We all experience pain in life - conflict, illnesses, disappointed dreams, broken relationships, loved ones who die or suffer. It is important to have ways to release that pain and to regularly cleanse ourselves. Otherwise, old pain begins to smother our creativity, our joy, our ability to connect with others. It impacts our health, and can even kill us. For the Dagara tribe of West Africa, like many other
cultures, grieving is a central element of life. Happiness and sorrow are seen as two sides of a single coin. To them, expressing the full range of emotions is essential for good health and spiritual balance. Traditional Dagara wisdom also recognizes the importance of being received back into the village when passing through major life changes like grief.
In Sobonfu's words:

"Communal grieving offers something that we do not get when we grieve by ourselves. Communal grieving helps us get the kind of deep healing we need through receiving support, validation, acknowledgment and witness."

The weekend of October 3-5, 2008, Sobonfu will share one of the most important rituals of her people. The Grief Ritual is a soul-cleansing rite that can help us to release grief, lighten our soul, and let our true spirit be heard, deepening our sense of balance and fulfillment.

Sobonfu Some is a daughter of the Dagara tribal community, growing up in a world of nature and song, with family and village always nearby to mentor, and to honor and support the uniqueness of each person's contributions to the world. Sobonfu (whose name means "Keeper of Rituals") was educated from birth to prepare for her life's work, and now teaches and leads rituals throughout North America and Europe, bringing a message of profound significance and practical application to our lives. Dagara rituals, as she points out, are about healing, acknowledgment of people and their gifts, and making spirit tangible by preparing mind, body, and soul to receive the spirituality that is all around us. Regular use of ritual helps people to keep finding their way back to wholeness, peace, and acceptance of self and others.
